some of the Cooks

some of the Cooks by Farmhouse Greetings
some of the Cooks, a photo by Farmhouse Greetings on Flickr.

This photo was taken at my Aunt Ruth's wedding in the early 1950s, of 7 of her 9 brothers who served as "servers" at her reception. The two not shown , Edward and Manville(Pee Wee), served as best man and an usher. L to R: Frances, Robert, Raymond(Sport), my Dad- Lawrence (Al), Carleton(Abe), Ralph (Marsh)and Harold (Jake). In a large family there are many nicknames! My Aunt Ruth's given name was Edna Ruth but I grew up knowing her as Aunt John.

Wow. Nine brothers! Did she have any sisters? They make great event staff!

Thank you, Linda, for your comments! Yes, there was one older sister, Clarice, who serverved as our family matriarch until her death. She kept the family together through her very powerful presence and phone calls...she kept tabs on everyone! Of the original eleven children born to my grandparents, now only the youngest, Ruth, remains. ( She is in her 80s). The Cooks were just good, hardworking, unassuming people and hopefully their influence and values will be passed down through the generations. I'm grateful that we still gather in June for family reunions, more from habit than anything. I miss my parents so much, but realize that's the natural course of life...
